Three main programs under Canada's Express Entry system for skilled workers seeking permanent residency.
The Federal Skilled Worker program is the most widely used Express Entry pathway, designed for qualified professionals with foreign work experience. Applicants are first assessed on a 100-point grid covering education, language ability, work experience, age, arranged employment, and adaptability — a minimum score of 67 is required to be eligible. Once in the Express Entry pool, candidates are ranked by their CRS score and invited during regular draws. This program is ideal for skilled workers from overseas who have strong language scores and relevant qualifications.
The Canadian Experience Class is specifically designed for individuals who are already living and working in Canada on a temporary basis — including international graduates with a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). Because applicants already have Canadian work experience, the CEC has no minimum education requirement and does not require proof of settlement funds, making it one of the most accessible PR pathways. CEC candidates often receive high CRS scores due to Canadian experience bonus points and skill transferability factors.
The Federal Skilled Trades program targets qualified tradespeople such as electricians, plumbers, welders, heavy equipment operators, carpenters, and other skilled trade workers. This pathway has lower language requirements compared to FSW and CEC, making it ideal for hands-on professionals. Applicants need either a valid Canadian job offer of at least one year or a certificate of qualification issued by a Canadian provincial or territorial authority. Canada has a strong and growing demand for skilled tradespeople, particularly in construction, manufacturing, and natural resources sectors.
Language proficiency is the single largest factor in your CRS score. Achieving CLB 9+ in IELTS, CELPIP, or TEF/TCF can add up to 136 points. Even a one-band improvement in a weaker skill (e.g., writing) can result in a significant score boost. Consider retaking your test after focused preparation to maximise this opportunity.
A Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) nomination adds 600 CRS points to your Express Entry profile — nearly guaranteeing an Invitation to Apply in the next draw. Each province has unique streams targeting specific occupations, international graduates, or candidates with connections to the province. Research provinces like Ontario (OINP), British Columbia (BC PNP), Alberta (AINP), and Saskatchewan (SINP) for the best fit.
Canadian work experience earns direct CRS points (up to 80 for 3+ years) and also unlocks valuable skill transferability bonuses when combined with strong language scores or education. Studying in Canada on a study permit followed by a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) is one of the most effective ways to build Canadian experience and transition to permanent residency through the CEC or FSW program.
A valid job offer supported by a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) can add 50 points for most NOC TEER 0/1/2/3 occupations, or 200 points for senior executive-level positions (NOC 00). Our team can help connect you with Canadian employers and guide you through the LMIA-exempt and LMIA-supported employment pathways to strengthen your Express Entry profile.
